How can I dull or antique gold trim (sewing)?

I am currently sewing my Halloween costume, but the gold trim that I use is too bright and shiny. Does anyone know what I could use to make it more boring and outdated for? I thought it might be a kind of varnish, but he was not sure what you could use. Thank you!
