The Canal du Midi was built by Pierre-Paul Riquet between 1667 and 1681 (during the reign of Louis XIV) with the help of some 12,000 workers. The road, which was a dirt road was extremely slow and costly. It was easier to transport heavy goods by water. The wine region needs to be exported or sent northern France.
